Free SWF to AVI Converter is a simple yet comprehensive utility that can transform your Flash SWF videos into AVI, MKV, or MOV video files, as well as into animated GIFs. Besides, it can also extract the audio stream in any SWF file and save it as an MP3 or WAV audio file, among other formats. Finally, it will also allow you to take snapshots of your favorite frames, and save them in any of the most popular image formats, such as JPG or BMP.
Its clear and intuitive interface seems to have been designed to please both novice and more experienced users. The entire conversion process can be carried out just by following the oversized icons located in the top-left corner of the interface – open file/folder, crop, watermark, and convert. You can skip the crop and watermark features and jump directly to the “convert” button, but you will always need to select an output format first. The list of output formats provided is probably not as long as in other similar conversion tools, but the ones supported here are neatly organized in a very convenient way. Formats are grouped into various categories, which are either device-based (such as Sony PS3 Video or XBOX 360 Video) or media-based (Image Files, Generic Audio, HD Video, etc.). An extra category has been added to store your customized profiles. More savvy users can move to the “Advanced” tab, where they can select the output format directly from a standard drop-down box and tweak the default values provided for the bit rate, the aspect ratio, or the frame rate.
Both “Crop” and “Add watermark” features can be configured in the same dialog, where you can define the dimensions that the cropped area will have as well as add an image-based watermark with the dimensions and the level of transparency of your choice.
Unlike in other conversion tools, when you click on the “Convert” button, the program will capture the SWF video before re-encoding it into the selected output format. This means that you are asked to sit and watch the entire video while it is being captured for conversion (?). Despite this uncommon behavior, the quality of the resulting video files will compensate you for your patience.
